Using Lists to Organize Your Contacts

Lists allow you to organize your contacts into groups of people that share the same characteristics and may regularly receive the same messages. They are similar to distribution lists you may use with email. Contacts can be added to one or more lists; however, contacts do not have to be on a list. There are multiple ways to add contacts to a list. You can add contacts to a list manually, as part of the opt-in process, or as an action within an automated workflow. You can also remove contacts from your lists without deleting them from SlickText.

Lists are similar to Segments, but they serve different purposes. Lists are relatively static.  A contact remains on a list indefinitely, unless you manually remove them or they are removed as a step in a workflow.  Segments, on the other hand, are dynamic and are based on conditions you define. A contact that was included in a segment one day, may not be in a segment the next day if their data changes or no longer matches the conditions of the segment. Examples of segments would be “Subscribed date is less than 30 days ago” or “Membership status is active”.

Creating a List in SlickText

The main purpose for creating lists in SlickText is to organize your contacts into groups of people that will often receive the same messages. When creating a campaign to send a mass text message, you will have the option to send the message to one or more lists. See Send or Schedule Mass Text Messages to learn more. Before you can choose to send a campaign to a list, you’ll first need to create the list.

  1. Once you’ve logged into SlickText, click on Audience on the left navigation bar and choose Lists.
  2. Click on the Create List button in the top right corner of the page.
  3. Enter the name of your list under List Name and add a description if you would like.
  4. You can now add contacts to the list.

Adding Existing Contacts to a List Manually

You can add one or more contacts to a list. A contact must already exist in SlickText.

  1. Once you’ve logged into SlickText, click on Audience on the left navigation bar and choose Contacts.
  2. Sort or filter your contacts list to reveal the contacts you intend to add or remove from the list.
  3. Use the checkboxes to the left of the contacts to select the ones that you intend to add to a list. You can also click the box in the header row to select all contacts on the page or all contacts that match the filters. Click the Actions menu at the top and choose Add to Lists.
  4. Pick up to 5 lists and select Add to Lists.

Note:

Contacts can be on more than 5 lists. If you want to add contacts to more than 5 lists, repeat the instructions above for the additional lists.

Automatically Add Contacts to a List When They Subscribe

SlickText’s list growth tools are powerful ways to grow your contacts by allowing them to subscribe to your brand. When contacts subscribe to your brand using one of SlickText’s list growth tools, they can also be added to any of your lists automatically.

  1. Go to the settings for the list growth tool you want to use to automatically add new contacts to a list and click on Contact Behavior.
  2. Under Contact Behavior, select Add to List.
  3. Choose one or more lists. When a contact subscribes using this tool, they will automatically get added to the list(s) you selected.

Adding Contacts to a List When you Create the Contact
