Choosing a Mailchimp Audience and Syncing Contact Fields

Before We Begin

Integrating SlickText and Mailchimp requires you to have an account with both platforms. It’s also important to know that SlickText has a minimum contact requirement of a mobile phone number, while Mailchimp requires an email address. That means contacts that don’t meet the minimum requirement of each platform will not sync to the other. Because of the differences in how the two platforms manage contacts, sometimes making a change to a contact in one platform may create a new contact in the other. These uncommon scenarios are covered in the Syncing Data sections below.

Here are some terms it will be helpful to know as you read through this article:

Term

Definition

 Opt-In Status

Opt-In Status determines if a contact is eligible to receive mass text messages or not. Contacts can have one of five statuses:

  • Not Subscribed
  • Pending Subscription
  • Subscribed
  • Unsubscribed
  • Blocked

 Mailchimp Audience

Paid Mailchimp accounts allow you to have more than one audience of contacts. Even if you only have one, you must select a Mailchimp audience to sync with your SlickText contacts.

 Contact Fields

Contact fields store data about your contacts. Both SlickText and Mailchimp have basic contact fields like name, email, and phone number. Both platforms also allow you to create custom fields to store additional data about your contacts.

Connecting Your SlickText and Mailchimp Accounts

Before data can flow between your SlickText and Mailchimp accounts, you’ll need to permit SlickText to access your Mailchimp account. Here’s how:

  1. From the Dashboard, click on your name in the bottom left corner and choose Settings
  2. On the Settings page, click on Integrations.
  3. Scroll through the list of integrations and click on Mailchimp.
  4. In the top right corner of the page, click the Install button, then click Install again to confirm.
  5. A Mailchimp login page will appear. Enter your credentials and click Log In.
  6. On the next page, review the terms, then click Authorize at the bottom.
  7. If the installation is successful, you’ll be redirected back to SlickText to configure the integration settings.

Syncing Data from Mailchimp to SlickText

In this section, you’ll select a behavior for when contact changes are coming from MailChimp to SlickText.

  • Create new contacts and update existing ones in SlickText: When a new contact is created in Mailchimp that contains a mobile number, a new contact will be created in SlickText. When changes are made to contact fields in Mailchimp that sync with SlickText, those changes will overwrite the contact’s existing data in SlickText.

Note:

When a phone number is added to an existing contact in Mailchimp, SlickText will create a new contact since that contact now meets SlickText’s minimum requirement.

Note:

Changing a contact’s phone number in Mailchimp will create a new contact in SlickText with identical data except for the new phone number.

  • Update existing SlickText contacts only: When changes are made to contact fields in Mailchimp that sync with SlickText, those changes will overwrite the contact’s existing data in SlickText. New contacts created in Mailchimp will not sync with SlickText.
  • Don’t do anything: When changes are made to contact fields in Mailchimp, nothing happens in SlickText.

Contact Opt-In Status

If Create new contacts and update existing ones in SlickText is selected, you’ll need to choose an opt-in status for these new contacts.

  • If SMS permission is being collected when contacts join your audience in Mailchimp, choose Subscribed, which is the default option.
  • If SMS permission is not being collected for your Mailchimp audience, choose Not Subscribed.

Syncing Data from SlickText to Mailchimp

In this section, you’ll select a behavior for when contact changes are going from SlickText to Mailchimp.

  • Create new contacts and update existing ones in Mailchimp: When a new contact is created in SlickText containing an email address, a new contact will be created in Mailchimp. When changes are made to contact fields in SlickText that sync with Mailchimp, those changes will overwrite the contact’s existing data in Mailchimp.

Note:

When an email address is added to an existing contact in SlickText, Mailchimp will create a new contact since that contact now meets Mailchimp’s minimum requirement.

Note:

Changing a contact’s email address in SlickText will create a new contact in Mailchimp with identical data except for the new email address.

  • Update existing Mailchimp contacts only: When changes are made to contact fields in SlickText that sync with Mailchimp, those changes will overwrite the contact’s existing data in Mailchimp. New contacts created in SlickText will not sync with Mailchimp.
